UPDATE - 1/2/2011 - During the Portsmouth, NH City Council Meeting of Monday, December 6, 2010, Ken Smith twists facts and rants on for 7 minutes and 48 seconds about why he supports the police union (although he forgot to mention that they supported him in his election bid). In this segment Portsmouth NH City Councilor Ken Smith discusses his reasons for voting yes for the Police Union Contract and why Ken Smith thinks it's ok to give the police a raise during the Great Recession, saying it's not a raise, rather a cost of living increase in their pay - isn't an increase in pay a raise?! Who's he trying to fool?! I, along with other people, don't think Ken Smith represents the Portsmouth citizen, rather he represents the Police and their Union. UPDATE - 1/15/2010 - I was in Downtown, Portsmouth tonight and found Portsmouth City Councilor Ken Smith was parked at an expired meter for at least 20 minutes! Additionally, the metered spot was a 15 minute spot. Click here for the pictures and more details - looks like he's above the law, or thinks he is.
UPDATE - 11/15/2009 - I told you so! Just days after being re-elected, Portsmouth City Councilor Ken Smith, Chairman of the Parking Committe, lead the comittee to a vote on spending $130,000 tax dollars to complete the installation of new meters to replace the old ones. Why couldn't this wait until the economy was back to normal? How about giving that $130,000 back to residents rather than buying and installing new meters before the end of the year? Given the 1 1/2 month timeframe to complete the project, it has obviously been planned out, and the vote AFTER the election was likely done to prevent Smith from losing the election.
I encourage you to stop by Ken's store, Maine-ly New Hampshire at 22 Deer Street in Portsmouth, NH, or call Ken Smith by phone at work at (603) 422-9500 or at home at (603) 433-3148 and tell him this is not the time to waste our tax dollars on this silly project of his!
Did you know that approximately 15-35% of the revenue that is processed through the new meters goes directly to Cale Systems, the parking meter company? Yes, between 15% and 35% of the money people put into the meters leaves Portsmouth and goes into the pockets of a big international corporation.
